The word "panettone" is believed to derive from the Italian term for a large bread. The origin of panettone is uncertain but is the subject of several legends, all of which point to the Milan region. One of them tells the story that panettone was created as a replacement for a burned dessert by the cook of the Duke of Milan. With the help of a little boy named Toni and thanks to his idea of using leftovers from the pantry, panettone, known as "pane di Toni," was born on the occasion of the Christmas dinner.
