Sea Biscuits

Saint-Tropez, the Mediterranean and Biscuits

In our fabrique in Saint-Tropez, each biscuit tells a story and that of the sea biscuits deserves our attention...

It all starts with a simple need

A 15th-century sailor sets out for months at sea. Bread molds in the damp, meat rots in the sun, vegetables spoil over time. Something else was needed.

The solution was beautifully simple: flour, water, sometimes an egg. A dough cooked once, then a second time; hence the pretty name "biscuit" , literally "cooked twice" .

The result was miraculous: hard as stone and indestructible. These little marvels crossed oceans without weakening, keeping intact the taste of dry land.

The golden age of ports

In the 19th century, biscuit factories flourished in all the major French ports: Nantes, Bordeaux, Marseille, Toulon. Each city developed its own recipe, its little secrets, its unique way of transforming grain into a journey.

These biscuits go on adventures: with Newfoundlands to the icy cod banks, with merchant ships to islands with sing-song names, with Mediterranean fishermen who know every cove on the coast...

In the darkness of the holds, they carry within them a piece of home, a promise of return.

Saint-Tropez at that time

Our small fishing port lived to the rhythm of tartanes and nets. There was no biscuit factory in our village; we were still too small for that. But our seafaring ancestors were well acquainted with these precious provisions that accompanied their sea trips. The spirit was already there: this idea that a biscuit must last, accompany you faithfully, tell where you come from with the simplicity of true things.

"In the darkness of the holds, they carry within them a piece of home, a promise of return."

What we kept from it

Today, in our biscuit fabrique, we carry this heritage with us. Our creations have evolved considerably since those sturdy cakes of yesteryear. They have been transformed into edible postcards, tender to the bite, perfumed with the sweet flavors of our Provence.

But at heart, it's the same generosity: a biscuit that tells the story of a journey, that carries within it something that lasts. Like the ship's biscuits of yesteryear, our biscuits allow you to take home a piece of our country.

From the necessary to the delicious

The history of the sea biscuit is similar to that of Saint-Tropez: what was a necessity became an art of living, what was practical became a pleasure. But at the heart of it all, there is always the same desire to share something good, something real.

When you bite into one of our biscuits, you taste this story. The robustness of the ancients transformed into Provençal pleasure, the maritime adventure that continues smoothly, carried by the offshore wind that still caresses our village.

In our fabrique, this beautiful story continues to be written, one biscuit at a time.
